Kota Marudu: A total of RM1.8 million was distributed to 2,576 hardcore poor here through the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) programme, Tuesday.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili, in presenting the assistance, said about 10,000 people were eligible for the assistance here and that the remaining 8,000 recipients had their aid banked in into their respective accounts.

Speaking at the BR1M presentation ceremony at the Community Hall here, Ongkili said the programme showed the Government's concern for the people's needs.

"BR1M is just one of incentives provided by the Government to help lighten the people's burden, especially the lower income families," said Ongkili, advising recipients to spend the assistance wisely.

On another development, Ongkili, who is also the Member of Parliament here, said some 2,500 hardcore poor families in the district will benefit from the newly introduced MyBeras Programme, adding it is the highest distribution in Malaysia.

"Kota Marudu folks are set to receive the 20kg of rice per month beginning next month," he said, adding the assistance was timely, especially with the long drought affecting the people's wellbeing.

Ongkili, therefore, urged the District Office to work closely with the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) to ensure the aid is given to the right and deserving people.
