Mastic Should Strive To Be Official STI Information Centre

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Science and Technology Information Centre (Mastic) should strive to be the official reference centre for national science, technology and innovation (STI) strategic information.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said Mastic, under the patronage of his ministry, should be brave to carry out improvements and transformation, especially in collecting STI data and studies.

"I am confident the role of Mastic will continue to be relevant as an important engine of the government, and it should be empowered till it becomes a national STI information centre.

"STI indicators play an important role in gauging the level of Malaysia's competitiveness in STI. Thus, Mastic should understand the importance of supplying accurate and correct data to international bodies to protect the national image and performance in the world," he said.

Ongkili was speaking at Mastic's 20th anniversary celebration here today.

He said, in its transformation effort, Mastic should take into consideration, building close cooperation with various parties and stakeholders.

He said, in line with the government's effortS to build a knowledgeable community in science and technology, Mastic should share its data and information with various parties involved.

"Efforts to develop STI indicators are being implemented by Mastic which should raise its image at all levels, and with various bodies such as Asean, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Unesco and Organisation of Islamic Conference," added Ongkili.

According to him, from the Sixth Malaysia Plan to the Tenth Malaysia Plan, the ministry had carried out five major studies in R&D, bibliometric innovation study, public facility and equipment study, as well as STI indicator studies in which 82 types of STI indicators produced were used by various agencies in the public and private sectors.
