Ongkili receives leadership award for ICT contributions

PETALING JAYA: Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili has received a leadership award for putting Malaysia's ICT industry on the global map. 

Ongkili was presented the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation (Asocio) Leadership Award by its chairman Bunrak Saragganda on Tuesday during the ICT Awards Night Gala Dinner, organised by the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (Pikom).

The Asocio Leadership Award is given to statesmen, presidents, prime ministers and leaders who have made a significant difference to their local ICT industries.

Previous recipients include former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

 In presenting the awards, Asocio cited the numerous ICT missions Ongkili led around the globe, including leading Malaysian trade missions to Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia to spearhead efforts in assisting the private sector access the regional markets in the field of ICT, biotechnology and renewable energy.

Ongkili was also noted for his contributions in opening up new markets in the developing world.

The association added that as Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ongkili had also provided pivotal support to agencies responsible for ICT development in the country.
