Dr Ongkili: All must contribute for the good of the community

TAMBUNAN: Unity begins in the family and it is the basis of the strength of a community that lives in peace and harmony, said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili.

Dr Ongkili said that a community should exist as a family, in which each member contributes to the well being of the community and like a family they are bound by love and care for one another.

“Unity is strength and a family, as well as the community, becomes weak when there is division. Unity starts from within the family and if the family is united, so will the community,” he said when launching the Dewan Johnity PSO (Pogun Sakag Ongkili) at Kg Keranaan in this interior Sabah district on Monday.

In conjunction with the launching, he also held a Christmas celebration, “Sakag Ongkili Christmas Celebration” at the hall which was attended by his family, friends and the villagers who lived nearby.

He said preservation of family ties was very important and within the community, gatherings and community activities such as sports and gotong-royong are important to keep the community close-knit.

As such, he said that the building of the Dewan Johnity PSO which can accommodate 600 people could be used by families and the community there to promote togetherness and healthy activities for the youths and community.

“I believe that the environment in which the children and youth grow up in also shapes them into what they will become. Support from the community is very important and so are healthy activities that promote unity.

“It is my hope to see this hall serve the community better and may it be a place where family ties can be strengthened through events and activities that will be held here,” Dr Ongkili added.
