Government To Announce Decision On Sabah/Sarawak Bumiputera Development Lab Report

SIBU, May 9 (Bernama) -- The Federal Government will announce several decisions that it would take from the findings by the Sabah/Sarawak Bumiputera Development Laboratory set up under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Maximus Johnity Ongkili, one of the ministers involved in the programme, said today Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak might announce these decisions when he visits Sibu this May 13.

"The lab had been discussing not less than seven major issues that among others include land, employment, socio-economic development, education and entrepreneurship involving our community in Sabah and Sarawak," he added.

He was speaking to reporters after launching a solar technology energy supply project for the computer laboratory of Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Tutus, about an hour journey on express boat from here.

He said the Cabinet had received a report on the lab committee findings about three weeks ago.

The Sabah/Sarawak Bumiputera Development Laboratory was set up in February this year as a move to tailor the National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) programmes to meet the needs of the Bumiputeras in the two states.

Maximus said the efforts under the GTP and emphasis on the NKRAs reflected the commitment of the government under Najib's leadership to see that people in Sabah and Sarawak would have equal opportunities to enjoy greater development.

"Never in the past had the Federal government given such a commitment and greater attention to the basic needs of our community especially those staying in remote areas in Sabah and Sarawak," he added.

Speaking at the project launching ceremony earlier, Maximus said the implementation of the project was in line with the government's move to narrow the digital divide between urban and rural areas.

The introduction of the solar-powered computer laboratory would create a great impact to the rural children's learning experience, he added.
