Prime Minister launches two new halal standards

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Press Release) -- Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak launched two new halal standards - MS 2200:2008 Standards on Halal Cosmetics and MS 2400:2010 Standards on Halal Logistics - at the opening ceremony of MIHAS 2010 and the World Hahal Research 2010 today.

Witnessing the launch were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili and Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed. Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili also presented the two standards documents to the Prime Minister during the launch.

The halal standards introduced by Standard Malaysia, an agency under MOSTI, would ensure better access to halal products amongst the trading nations and make the Islamic community feel safe and assured that the food and products they consume are halal and toyyiban. The launch was held at Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre.

As part of the initiatives of making Malaysia the hub for halal products in the region, the Halal Cosmetics standards was established in the series of Halal Standards for Islamic Consumer Goods. It prescribes practical guidelines for halal cosmetics and personal care industry and serves as a basic requirement for cosmetics and personal care industry and trade or business in Malaysia.

The Standards on Halal Logistics is the first comprehensive Halal logistics standard in the world, which addresses three main components: transportation, warehousing and retailing. It addresses the framework for an organisation to establish a management system based on halalan-toyyiban requirements in meeting customer and applicable regulatory requirements.
