Panel Endorses PSC On Electoral Reforms Membership

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- The Dewan Rakyat Selection Committee today endorsed the appointment of nine members of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Electoral Reforms.

They comprise five Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs, three opposition MPs and an Independent MP.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili chairs the committee. He also represents Sabah and the Kadazandusuns. The other BN members are Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi (representing Sarawak and the Ibans), Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad (representing Umno and the Malays), Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn (representing MCA and the Chinese) and Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan (representing MIC and the Indians).

The opposition pact is represented by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Azmin Ali, PAS election director Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli and DAP deputy election director Anthony Loke.

Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong represents the Independent Consensus.

Their appointment was endorsed during the selection committee's meeting, chaired by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, here Tuesday.

The office of the Dewan Rakyat speaker said in a statement that the PSC's membership would be officially announced at the Dewan Rakyat sitting tomorrow.

Present at the meeting today were Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Kulai MP Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Human Resources Minister Datuk S. Subramaniam, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang.

The PSC's setting up was approved by the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. It is tasked to study the country's electoral process and submit recommendations for improvement.

It has a six-month mandate during which it will submit a report to the Dewan Rakyat.
